Interview

What’s it like modeling in Edmonton Fashion Week?

It’s a lot of fun. You get your hair and makeup done all day while watching the shows, then finally you get to walk the catwalk and pose.

My only frame of reference for modeling is, what else, America’s Next Top Model. Give me a tip that would guarantee me a place in the top two!

The most important thing is just to take time at the end of the catwalk. A lot of girls just spin and they’re gone. That will make all the photographers unhappy, because they won’t get anything. Although it is intimidating to be in front of everybody, it’s really important to just relax.

Perfect. Now I just need to learn how to“smile with my eyes”. Should I get signed by a modeling agency?

I’m with an agency right now, but they suck. There is absolute favouritism and pressure to lose weight. They pretty much tell every girl that they need to lose weight and it’s even worse when the models are as young as fourteen years old. They told me the same thing. They didn’t even beat around the bush, they just straight up told me to lose weight. For me though, I really like being active and building muscle, and in the modeling industry, muscle is a big no-no.

Wouldn’t want a model to look too healthy... Have shows like Americas Next Top Model changed the modeling industry at all?

Yeah, it has made a lot of models way more catty. I always think that because you’re selling yourself, you need to be very kind and you should want people to like you. A lot of young models come in and have so much attitude! They can be very competitive and bitchy.
