InterviewLet’s talk about cats. You’ve got three cats?Yep, three cats. Two used to be strays, but not anymore. Sad story, our neighbor moved away but forgot his cats. The one cat had kittens under our deck and stuck around, so I’ve since brought them into house culture. They have destroyed everything. Ironically, she recently destroyed my computer mouse...cat and mouse. Anyway, back on track... Why did you decide to start a label? Not happy with the rest of them?I just decided that it was the best way to go about it. A bunch of my friends and I were all making music, and instead of putting ourselves out there, I thought screw it, I’ll start a label and release our music. In the beginning, it was almost a way to add some legitimacy to us, but now we are actually doing it and trying to make something of it. Tokyoh isn’t trying to function only as a label, but more of a collective of artists. You said earlier that you have been signing people from overseas?Yeah, I’m in talks with this one artist from Sweden and another from Belgium. Anyone from anywhere, as long as the music quality is there, I’m super down. Once you’ve got all these artists, are you planning on touring? The goal for most electronic musicians is to tour, but you can’t tour until you’ve got a booking agent, and you can’t get a booking agent until you look good enough to them. Our Tokyoh showcase shows are going to be all about getting more recognition for local producers and try and boost them to the national scene. How is Edmonton compared to the rest of Canada in the electronic music scene?Edmonton is getting a lot better, but we are not very friendly to the underground here. We’ve got a blossoming dubstep scene but it is because dubstep is the new “cool”. In Edmonton, you are dealing with local djs and in Montreal, your local djs are MSTRKRFT and A-Trak. |
