Interview

Looking over your work it seems like you’ve worked in every medium possible How did you get started in art?

I’ve been doing it most of my life. I did go on a little hiatus I guess for a while and got my ticket as an electric motor mechanic. I eventually came back to it and the fundamentals program at the U of A is incredible. A few of the professors there are so dedicated and inspiring. It changed the direction of my life.

Where did you first see yourself being?

I was originally planning on architecture, but ended up falling in love with art in general. I was constantly moving between design and art, and sculpture and painting. I even started in print-making before moving to painting. I’ve been all over the place.

What is it about making art that draws you in so much?

I fell in love with the studio atmosphere and working in the studio. I like it when it’s just you and the piece you’re working on. It’s very gratifying.

How have all your different pursuits influenced your work up to now?

In the trades I had the experience of working in the mining industry, in the coal mines and up north in the tar sands, and there’s this huge scale to everything, combined with this massive movement of earth, that really impacted me. There’s this overwhelming feeling about the experience of being in that situation. I can’t say I realized it while I was there but looking back after getting more involved in art I have a new respect for it.

You’re the President of the Visual Arts Student Association. What do you have coming up next that people can look out for?

We have our grad show coming up that runs from April 6th to the 16th. The opening night is the 8th and there will be food and drinks in the FAB gallery. It’s sort of our introduction to the professional world and hopefully our sending off.
