Interview

You have been getting some radio play across Canada lately. What’s it like hearing your own voice on the air all of a sudden?

It is somewhat weird, but something that I have waited for. The first time it happened it caught me off guard. I heard the first few notes of the song and thought, “I know this song somehow...Wait! It’s me!”

Tell me about your lead single, the song you want everyone to hear in the next two months.

It is kind of weird being an independent artist, the radio stations get to choose which song they want to use as the single and they’ve all chosen different songs. One of the songs I wrote, called “Thank You”, is about a visit I made to India a couple of years ago to volunteer. That song has been picked up quite a bit. Portions of all the CD’s I sell are also donated to that school in India.

When did you decide that you wanted to be a singer-songwriter?

I started singing when I was ten years old. I trained classically but I always liked the pop stuff way more. Living in Alberta, I ended up doing a lot of country singing competitions across western Canada. Then, in 2002, I was Klondike Katie, which meant doing about fifty shows in ten days. I started going to a lot of open stages and performing on a more regular basis. In the last year, I recorded my first CD. I have a release party for it on March 5th at the Blue Chair Café!

Looking at your new EP, it seems like most of the songs are influenced by love in someway.

Yes, I’m very “lovey”! I tend to write about things that have touched my heart in someway. The school in India is a good example because it was so meaningful to me. There’s also relationship stuff on there, both good and bad.

There’s nothing that inspirers more songwriting then relationships - proven fact.
