InterviewIt’s not too often I meet someone who knows how to wield a sword. Tell me what it’s all about.European sword fighting is really awesome. We gather every Tuesday to spar and learn how to do historic European fighting. It’s 14th century German fighting where you don’t defend, you parry and turn everything into an attack because the best type of defense is a solid attack. I’ll have to take your word for it. How big is this sword you swing around?It’s about 5 feet long and weighs two or three kilograms. It’s called a hand and a half sword because it can be used with two hands or only one. Remind me not to piss you off. The last thing I want to do is anger a sword fighting Belorussian. Where does all this intimidation come from?In Belarus, things are a lot more intense. If you smile too much people will think you’re an easy mark and someone might try to beat you up. I’m not sure if you’ve seen some of those soccer games in Europe, but there’s a lot of violence. You have to be somewhat intimidating at all times. You can’t let on that you’re a “nice guy”. How did you get involved with the MacEwan SA? I’m thinking people were afraid not to vote for you.I just wanted to get involved with something. Once I did get involved I wanted to be a part of it more and more and change the problems I could see around me. So I ran for VP Ops/Finance and from here I can influence MacEwan to work on student issues like lower tuition. Just last week, I put forward a proposal to have MacEwan install a green roof on top of the campus. If you decide to run for student council next year, can your poster be of you on a horse with a suit of armor holding your sword?I’ll think about that. I guess I could fight tuition increases much more easily with a sword. |
